MACHINE DYNAMICS & TRIBOLOGY LAB Overview

The Machine Dynamics and Tribology Lab in NTUA is a research laboratory in the School of Mechanical Engineering with main focus on dynamics of machines, mechanisms, and mechanical structures, and on tribological problems related to lubrication. A major part of the research work is related to the control of dynamics of machines, mechanisms, and structures by analyzing, designing, and testing controllable bearings (sliding bearings with oil or air, active magnetic bearings, and rolling element bearings). Novel tribotronic and structronic systems are conceived and developed through advanced intelligent mechatronics, aiming to establish new margins of operation for the applications of interest. MDTL focuses further on computational nonlinear dynamics of rotating machines and mechanisms, aiming to nonlinear dynamic design tools that are offered in our partners. MDTL provides advanced dynamic models, computational algorithms, and testing facilities for the dynamics of rotating machines like turbine-generator shaft trains, aeroengines, turbochargers and turbopumps, electric motors, internal combustion engines (piston engines), and their individual machine elements. Operability aspects in machinery establish research projects for the group of people in the Lab. Mechatronic elements are also developed in the lab to support the controllable nature of dynamics in potential future machines in power conversion and transport. The MDTL aims to both basic and applied research on machine dynamics and tribology, and most of the research work is funded both by governmental organizations/foundations and Industry in Greece and abroad. Courses on Dynamics are offered by the Lab in the undergraduate and postgraduate program of the School of Mechanical Engineering NTUA, and in interdepartmental Master Programs in NTUA. MDTL aims to a high quality of research with international impact, and its members align with discipline to international standards in the way of thinking and acting.
