Mahidol Wittayanusorn School (MWIT) was founded on 28 August 1990 with the purpose of promoting science and mathematics education in the Thai school system. The school is unique among Thai schools in that it functions as an autonomous public organization under the supervision of the Minister of Education, and was designated the country's first specialised science school. MWIT strives to provide the best international standard of education at the upper secondary level for exceptionally gifted students in science, mathematics and technology. The school endeavors to groom innovative thinkers who combine unrivaled morals and integrity with a passion to further develop our country. The conception of MWIT is the result of the country’s vision to produce well-rounded, responsible individuals with high capacity in science, mathematics and technology, who also have a commitment to contribute to the country’s future competitiveness. เมื่อวันที่ 25 สิงหาคม พุทธศักราช 2543 ได้มีการประกาศพระราชกฤษฎีกาจัดตั้งโรงเรียนมหิดลวิทยานุสรณ์ขึ้นเป็นโรงเรียนวิทยาศาสตร์แห่งแรกของประเทศไทย เปิดสอนในระดับมัธยมศึกษามีสถานภาพเป็นองค์การมหาชน ภายใต้การกำกับดูแลของรัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงศึกษาธิการ โรงเรียนมีอิสระในการดำเนินงาน รวมทั้งการพัฒนาหลักสูตรและสื่อที่มีลักษณะเฉพาะตัว แตกต่างจากโรงเรียนมัธยมศึกษาปกติโดยทั่วไป ภารกิจสำคัญของโรงเรียนคือ การวิจัย พัฒนา และสร้างองค์ความรู้ในการค้นหาและการจัดการศึกษาสำหรับผู้มีศักยภาพสูงด้านวิทยาศาสตร์ คณิตศาสตร์ และเทคโนโลยี ระดับมัธยมศึกษาที่สามารถใช้เป็นต้นแบบขยายผลในวงกว้างได้ ทั้งนี้เพื่อพัฒนานักเรียนเหล่านั้นให้มีความสามารถระดับมาตรฐานโลกมีจิตวิญญาณของความเป็นนักวิจัย นักประดิษฐ์คิดค้น มีสุขภาพพลานามัยที่ดี มีคุณธรรม จริยธรรม รักการเรียนรู้ มีความเป็นไทย มีความมุ่งมั่นในการพัฒนาประเทศชาติและมีเจตคติที่ดีต่อเพื่อนร่วมโลกและธรรมชาติเป็นตัวป้อนที่มีคุณภาพสูงเยี่ยมเข้าสู่ระดับอุดมศึกษาเพื่อพัฒนาไปสู่ความเป็นนักวิชาการนักวิจัยและนักประดิษฐ์คิดค้นระดับมาตรฐานโลกของประเทศชาติในอนาคต
