On July 18th, 1996, the administrative areas of the Besut District Council were expanded, increasing the total area of the Council to 123,367.80 square kilometers. The district focuses on developing basic agricultural industries, tourism services, and the Agropolis area, which serves as a hub for the collection and marketing of agricultural produce.
Besut District is a significant producer of rice, palm oil, tobacco, and fruits for the state. It is also known for its tourism activities, particularly Perhentian Island, with Kuala Besut serving as the main jetty to the island. The district's economy is primarily driven by agricultural activities, followed by service and tourism industries.
The 2020 Census reported a population of 154,168 in the Council area, representing 55% of the total population of Besut District, with the majority being Malays.
