We live in a world where colonial systems are still at work — in land ownership, education, heritage spaces, and in the ways communities are valued or erased. Manvrou Collective exists to challenge and change that. We work to reclaim space, power, and voice for communities still carrying the impact of colonisation, displacement, and apartheid. Our vision is a future where these communities are no longer pushed to the margins, but centred in their own stories, economies, and futures. We are a collective of activists, artists, and practitioners working with affected communities, organisations, and institutions to address the ongoing effects of colonial systems. Our work is about shifting power: – by reclaiming erased histories – by strengthening self-esteem and leadership, especially among youth – and by building ethical, respectful relationships between communities and the institutions that research, document, or profit from their heritage We also believe in the power of digitisation and immersive technologies — including digital archives, extended reality (XR), and sound-based storytelling — to unlock memory and reconnect communities with their histories. These tools help make erased knowledge visible, accessible, and felt. Whether we’re supporting farm worker communities, the Cape Malay choirs, or young people navigating identity in post-apartheid South Africa, we focus on real, practical steps toward systemic change. We do this by: • Building youth leadership in community organisations • Connecting communities with researchers, artists, and heritage institutions in ways that protect and honour their knowledge • Using arts, technology, and storytelling to restore memory and build collective power Why Manvrou? ‘Manvrou’ is a derogatory term to refer to butch, dominant, or masculine-presenting women in Afrikaaps, the variant of Afrikaans spoken on the Cape Flats. Naming ourselves Manvrou is a reminder: power can grow from the places we were once told to hide.
