Maysene Agric is embarking on a pilot project, based in Waterfall Midrand, set up to supply the growing need for locally produced fish, poultry and livestock feed as well as feed additive products. With 20% total agricultural gross value and over 41% of animal product gross value, our mission is to diversify food supply available to South African poultry farmers and centralize the production systems in the supply chain to reduce the overall carbon emission impact of the production of animal feed. Maysene Agric aims to use insect protein not only to supply poultry market, that is expanding roughly 3% per annum in South Africa, with the domestic consumption currently at 1 895 tons; but also to begin the process of removing biowaste which accounts for 30% of total food production and 45% of South African land fills. Converting this carbon emission contributor into a viable protein source closes the loop of production and in turn creates a much cleaner and healthier protein source locally, rather than relying on products like soy which have adverse effects environmentally both in production as well as logistically, our insect protein solution also has much greater bioavailability for our animals.
