Mental Health Matters 2 (MHM2) is a lived experience led charity working to transform systems with and for individuals and families affected by mental health, alcohol and other drug (AOD), and criminal involvement. We achieve this by embedding lived experience expertise throughout all levels of decision-making and activities. Our commitment to lived experience leadership is reflected in our Board structure, where four of seven positions are designated for skilled individuals with personal or family lived experience.
Established in 2010 as an unfunded group and incorporated as a charity in 2021, MHM2 has built a strong foundation in co-design, education, research and advocacy. We have formed partnerships and consortiums with numerous state, national and international bodies, including universities resulting in the development and promotion of innovative and contemporary practice approaches in mental health, AOD, and justice sectors.
Our approach is relational and human rights centred and fundamentally humanistic, holistic, and equitable. Our work is informed by regular engagement with individuals and families experiencing multiple, unmet needs within the broader community, We demonstrate that people with lived experience of mental health, AOD, and justice system challenges possess unique insights and capabilities that can transform these systems and create pathways for meaningful participation, partnerships and lived experience led initiatives that ensure that lived experience voices shape the policies, practices and systems that affect their lives.
MHM2 actively challenges stigmatizing perspectives that label people with serious mental health or AOD diagnoses and their families as dysfunctional or incapable of community contribution. Our co-designed initiatives focus on uncovering and building upon individual and family strengths. We develop targeted responses and resources that support people in (re)claiming their roles as valued, productive community members.
