Our Story
Founded in 1962 by José Francisco Sousa Lima and partners who are no longer part of the company, our business has a long and remarkable history.
In the early days, we faced major challenges in securing mining concessions, largely due to the strength and dominance of international competitors. However, once the concession was granted, a true transformation began in the supply of raw materials for ceramics and other industries relying on our products.
The availability of high-quality, locally sourced raw materials—at significantly lower costs—reduced the need for imports and made countless national industries viable, ultimately helping to generate hundreds of thousands of jobs. This highlights the strategic importance of the mining sector, which deserves continued recognition and support.
In defense of this sector, our company has fought political, technical, social, and personal battles. Though often difficult, these efforts have been worthwhile. Over the years, we have directly and indirectly contributed hundreds of millions of euros to the Portuguese economy—through private investment, job creation, state revenue, and the responsible valorization of Portugal’s natural resources.
