Harnessing the potential of rapidly growing amounts of data to gain knowledge is one of the elementary challenges facing the sciences. The classical, often hypothesis-driven methods for gaining knowledge must be supplemented by data-driven approaches in order to meet the conditions. The complex process of generating knowledge from data presents a variety of challenges and tasks that require interdisciplinary research and collaboration. This includes the areas of experimental data collection, data exploration and analysis, subsequent modeling, simulation, and data-driven parameterization of models, to simulation and a model revision based on simulation results and their comparison with observed data.
Orthogonal to this, mathematical modeling of interrelationships is a central theme in various scientific disciplines to enable hypothesis-driven methods for gaining knowledge. With the help of the resulting computer models, phenomena of interest can be simulated realistically, thus generating data from knowledge. Iterative model building interacting with simulations requires the development of professional methods, concepts and tools for the entire simulation process.
In addition to the data-driven and simulation-based sciences, the center identifies their linkage area, called model-data integration, as a viable topic for the future. This area is characterized by a cycle that brings together data-driven sciences with simulation-based sciences in an iterative process so that these approaches cross-fertilize each other.
The center brings together representatives of different disciplines across institutions and offers a platform for the implementation of interdisciplinary collaborative projects on a local and a supraregional level.
