MICL (Datamine International) Overview

This group is all about the early history of DATAMINE, from the formation of Mineral Industries Computing Ltd in 1981 by Stephen Henley and Peter Stokes to develop and market an integrated system of geological and mining software. The system was named DATAMINE. The initial version, largely based on the British Geological Survey G-EXEC geological data handling system, was released in 1983. By 1993 the company had grown to over 30 staff worldwide, and its success was recognised by Queen's Awards for Export in 1989 and Technological Achievement in 1990. In 1991-2, serious stresses became apparent due mainly to attempts by the minority owned Australian associated company to take control of the group's software development. A merger with the Australian company failed to resolve the problems, but instead led to a boardroom coup, with founding chairman @Stephen Henley and business development director @Ron Dougill ejected from the company in July 1993. With the exit of Stephen Henley, principal architect of the DATAMINE system, and subsequent departure of others who also had detailed knowledge of the core system, little further development took place on the main DATAMINE system or on the database management code underpinning it, so it is very likely that today's product still includes much of the original code, including code inherited from the G-EXEC system developed at BGS in the 1970s. Development of GUI applications ('GUIDE') started in 1990-1 and evolved into the 'Studio' product which replaced the original DATAMINE system in about 1995, but built on the same core functionality and including much of the same underlying code. Since 1993, ownership of the company has changed several times, for large but undisclosed sums, and the new owners have progressively expanded it beyond its original focus on geological and mining software, into more general mining consultancy. It is no longer the company that was set up with £100 capital in 1981.
