Mollii is an assistive device, providing a unique, mild, low frequency electro-stimulation therapy via a comfortable 2-piece suit specifically programmed to the needs of the individual.
Developed with the assistance of the most eminent Swedish research institutes, Mollii has been used in Sweden since 2010 for people with motor impairments and disabilities to improve movement with no negative side-effects. Its use throughout Europe has been increasing since 2012 and 2017 saw the launch of Mollii in Australia, by Cessnock-based company Métier Medical Ltd.
Mollii is designed to relax spastic, tense and aching muscles safely and simply thus helping those with spasticity and motor impairment. Mollii is used as a therapy by people with cerebral palsy, stroke, spinal cord injury, acquired brain damage and other diagnoses that lead to motor disabilities. More recently, Mollii has also had positive impacts on sport performance and recovery.
The wearer is fitted with the suit and an accompanying control unit which is then programmed to the specific needs of the individual during a professional assessment by a Mollii trained therapist. Electro-stimulation treatment progresses for a period of 60 minutes, targeting the specific muscle groups via the antagonist (opposite) muscles. This prompts lasting, natural reflexes such as Reciprocal Inhibition, to relieve muscle tension, imbalances, spasticity and other motor disabilities, thus improving range of motion, function and activity. The residual benefit of a 60 minute treatment can last for up to 48 hours after which Mollii therapy can easily be repeated in the home environment.
