Mures Magnesium (MMg) is developing a mineral reprocessing project in Mures county Romania to produce magnesium (Mg) metal - a EU Critical Raw Material, chrome oxide green (Cr2O3) and calcium chloride (CaCl2) by extraction these metals from a stored mineral waste. The new processing facility to be built in 2025-2027 will use the well-known and proven low-carbon footprint MgCl2 process and will be the first magnesium metal produced in the EU for over 20 years. This will give Europe a much-needed security supply of Mg metal which is currently 100% imported from China. The project will require no mining as the feedstock is an above ground stored waste to be processed on the future processing facility to be built directly beside the waste storage facility so requires no feedstock transportation and further adds to the low carbon footprint. Mg metal is a strategic EU metal having applications in the automotive, aviation and military industries and the project fits the EU Commission's strategic objectives to ensure reduced dependence on non-EU sources of CRM's with the aim of 40% of processing within the EU (EU CRM Act). MMg by using a mineral waste will assure circa 15% of the EU demand for Mg metal and in addition produce a chrome product also in high demand within the EU, Japan and the US. The principles followed by MMg mean that it feeds into the EU circular economy philosophy being sustainable by secondary resourcing and will use renewable energy from the adjoining 53 MW solar park development. As the MMg process technology uses CO2 as a reagent in its process wherever produced our process captures CO2 for reuse in the technological process.
MMg will provide long term employment for 270 people from an area where unemployment is high due to the reduction of industrial activity over the past years. MMg currently runs an EIT Raw Materials co-funded project (EU Magnesium - project Nr 21105) for upscaling its process to BAT.
