Muscular Dystrophy is a progressive neuromuscular genetic disorder where the muscles gradually lose their strength, leaving a patient completely immobile and dependent upon others for everyday activities. In India every year 4000 children are born with Muscular Dystrophy (MD).
It was in the year 1986 when one of the members, Ms. Sanjana, (Now President) got in touch with Dr. R. Janardhana Rao through a magazine named 'The Bridge' from Machilipattnam Andhra Pradesh, who was working for the cause of Muscular Dystrophy in India in the name of Indian Muscular Dystrophy Association. The reason why Sanjana got in touch with him was that she and her two brothers were living with Muscular Dystrophy a rare progressive disorder.
Dr. Rao's son Raman was effected by Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy the severest type of Muscular Dystrophy. Dr. Rao through his magazine 'The Bridge' registered more than 400 children and adults living with this rare disorder in India
By doing so he bridged the gap between North & South, East & West, poor & rich, caste & creed and crossed all the barriers anyone can think of.
His work was recognized by the world. (WAMDA, World Associations of Muscular Dystrophy).He lived the age of 97 yrs. and expired in 2013.
After five long years of association with him, he came down to North India in 1992.A small program was organized in the local PWD guest house, Solan. Here a few select citizens from Solan town and media from Chandigarh (Mr. Bipan Pabbi ) were invited. On June 16th 1992, under the kind guidance of Dr. R. Janardhana Rao, Himachal Chapter of Indian Association of Muscular Dystrophy was established. We did not know what to do and how to reach out to the people of this region. A beginning was made by reaching the medical certificates through CMO office. We found 22 cases of Muscular Dystrophy in district Solan, which was a big number for a small town like Solan.
