A comprehensive university with 10 undergraduate faculties/schools, 9 graduate schools, 3 research institutes, and 1 affiliated hospital. Since 2020, the university has embraced the mission of “Contributing to Planetary Health.” In 2023, to further promote this mission, it launched an action plan centered on three key pillars: Global Health, Global Ecology, and Global Risk.
[History] The university traces its roots back to 1857, when Dutch naval doctor Pompe van Meerdervoort introduced the first formal education in Western medicine in Japan. After enduring catastrophic destruction caused by the atomic bombing, the university was reestablished in 1949 through the integration of various specialized institutions into a new postwar national university system.
