Het NWP is ontstaan uit afspraken van het Klimaatakkoord. De centrale opgave is het onderzoeken en stimuleren van de bijdrage van waterstof aan het realiseren van de energietransitie. In 2022 hebben deelnemers aan het NWP een Routekaart Waterstof opgesteld. De Routekaart stelt doelen voor hernieuwbare waterstof in 2030 voor en beschrijft welke acties nodig zijn om die doelen te behalen.
