The National Cancer Control Program (NCCP) was established in 2017 following establishment of Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Project in 2016. The goal of NCCP is to decrease incidence and mortality due to cancer through primary prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment, palliative care, research and surveillance and capacity building. One of the main achievements of NCCP is creation of first Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Center in Jumhuriat Hospital in Kabul. Around 12,000 visits were made to this Center in 2017. In addition, hundreds of training and awareness programs are conducted for health care providers and lay people to increase the rate of early detection of various types of cancers mainly that of breast, esophagus, stomach cancers which is are the three most prevalent cancers in Afghanistan. Moreover, the first hospital based cancer registry was established in late 2016 and the first population based cancer registry , Kabul Cancer Registry, is to be established soon.
