The New Helvetic Society (NHG) was founded in 1914, shortly before the outbreak of the First World War, at a time when disagreements between German- and French-speaking Switzerland were threatening the country's internal peace. It saw itself as the successor to the Helvetic Society, which from 1761 to 1858 had contributed to the strengthening of the Confederation and the formation of the federal state of 1848. It merged with Rencontres Suisses (RS) to form the joint society "New Helvetic Society - Meeting Point Switzerland" on January 1, 2007. RS itself was founded in 1945 with the aim of strengthening the cohesion of the country in a turbulent time for Europe. A main concern of RS was the understanding between the social partners. The 2018 Ordinary Assembly of Delegates decided to shorten the name to New Helvetic Society.
