The Civic AI Lab is a research laboratory at Northeastern University that: (1) studies real world problems involving citizens, governments, and NGOs; (2) uses human centered design to create novel computational systems that address these problems to construct improved societies. Our civic tech research involves the areas of crowdsourcing, disinformation, and machine learning.
Our mission is to bring together an interdisciplinary group to share ideas, collaborate on research, and advance teaching related to Civic Tech. For this purpose, the lab has created strong alliances with Governments, civic organizations, and industry actors. Some of the lab's collaborators are Facebook Research, Mexico's Minsitry of Foreign Affairs, the National Democratic Institute, and the Inter-American Development Bank.
The lab has had noticeable influence on presidencies in Latin America by leading them to adopt Human Centered Design to deliver better services to citizens. The lab frequently collaborates directly with Mexico's Federal Government to design and research systems that are used throughout the nation. The lab's work has been covered on major news outlets, such as: the BBC, Deutsche Welle, Vice News and the New York Times. The lab also frequently publishes at top conferences and journals, such as ACM CHI, ACM CSCW, the Web Conference, AAAI ICWSM, where our research has also won honorable mentions.
