The National Spinal Injury Referral Hospital (NSIRH) offers specialized healthcare services to persons with spinal cord injuries (SCI) in Kenya and East and Central Africa. The core function of NSIRH is to rehabilitate patients with spinal cord injuries.
The NSIRH is located in Kilimani, Nairobi off Lenana road along Rose Avenue in Nairobi, on a 0.6149 of hectare. The Hospital was founded in 1944 as a facility to care for World War II soldiers who had spinal cord injuries. At that time, it was known as Amani Cheshire Home. The original structure was a house that was then donated to the Government of Kenya in 1963 by Amani Cheshire and after independence became known as the National Spinal Injury Hospital which was put under the management of Kenyatta National Hospital. In the year 2000, the Ministry of Health (MoH) allowed the center to operate as a semi-autonomous hospital within its own hospital management committee.
Currently it is the only hospital in East and Central Africa that provides rehabilitation services to persons with spinal cord injuries. It has a bed capacity of 33. The clientele are mostly Kenyan citizens but patients from the wider East and Central Africa have access to the facility.
