NUBIAN Research Overview

NUBIAN stands for Naphthoquinoidal Compounds for Bioimaging and Innovations Against Neglected Diseases. It is a Royal Society–funded international research collaboration between the United Kingdom, Brazil, and Sierra Leone. Led by: Dr Felipe Fantuzzi – University of Kent, United Kingdom Dr Guilherme Jardim – Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), Brazil Dr Sulaiman Lakoh – College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS), University of Sierra Leone NUBIAN brings together expertise in synthetic chemistry, computational modelling, and clinical research to develop new compounds for the diagnosis and treatment of neglected tropical diseases, especially Chagas disease and sleeping sickness. The project also supports training and institutional development, including the launch of the Sierra Leone UK Centre for Advanced Studies on Tropical and Infectious Diseases (CASTRID), a new hub for interdisciplinary research and capacity building in West Africa. Our vision is to connect molecules to medicine, empowering scientists across continents and contributing to health equity through international science.
