Supported by the DFG we are at the forefront of pioneering research that bridges laser physics and nuclear physics.
Based in Darmstadt and Bucharest, our program is a collaborative hub featuring an active community of leading scientists, students, and dedicated staff.
Our research focuses on the interaction between high-energy photons and nuclear matter. Our facilities, including the Superconducting Darmstadt Linear Electron Accelerator (S-DALINAC), PHELIX high-intensity laser system and the Extreme-Light Infrastructure – Nuclear Physics (ELI-NP), enable us to explore everything from nuclear structure physics to nuclear astrophysics and matter under extreme conditions.
The Darmstadt in-house accelerator dates back to 1956 with the visionary leadership of Professor Dr. Peter Brix, who established the institute with an electron accelerator. Today, the S-DALINAC remains a cornerstone of our research infrastructure, continually evolving with innovations like the first demonstration of an energy-recovery mode in Germany for enhanced beam stability, precision and energy efficiency.
