NYIKAL CBO is a grassroots community-based organization in the Lake Region of Nyanza, Kenya, dedicated to eradicating the exploitative practice of Jaboya—the coercive exchange of sex for fish—by providing sustainable economic opportunities, capacity-building programs, and advocacy initiatives. We help fishing communities in Karachuonyo, Homabay end Jaboya by empowering women, educating youth, and engaging men for lasting change. We help women, youth, and community leaders in Homa Bay break free from the exploitative practice of Jaboya by providing them with economic opportunities, gender equity education, and community-driven advocacy. Jaboya (sex-for-fish) is a deeply rooted practice in fishing communities — causing teenage pregnancies, school dropouts, HIV infections, and a cycle of poverty. At Nyikal CBO, we’re changing the narrative. We believe the gift is in our hands, not our bodies.
