The Rural Health Institute of New York (RHI) is an independent nonprofit dedicated to addressing public health issues and disparities across rural New York. Originally formed as a Cortland County Youth Prevention Coalition, RHI has evolved over 20 years into a regional partner in public health strategy, infrastructure, direct service, and communication.
We believe lasting change requires strong public health infrastructure: systems, processes, and partnerships adaptable to local needs. Our team of epidemiologists, project managers, database designers, and graphic designer brings together diverse skills in three core areas.
🔹 Data & Epidemiology - The foundation of RHI’s decision-making. We design protocols to answer targeted questions, collect and analyze data, and apply a scientific approach to guide our projects and activities. Our data-driven work is supported by a team of epidemiologists.
🔹 Administration & Collaborative Infrastructure – Building on our experience managing grant-funded projects, we support coalitions and collaborations. We work with partners to apply and adapt our processes, building tools and systems that move us toward shared, measurable goals.
🔹 Design & Health Communications - We pair custom, place-based visuals with evidence-based messaging to support tailored health communication. From social norming to social marketing, our campaigns inform, shift behaviors, and build health literacy in ways that resonate locally.
RHI works alongside partners to develop locally relevant tools that help communities understand and respond to public health needs. Whether the focus is harm reduction, housing, mental health, literacy, or early childhood development, we support the systems and relationships that enable lasting impact. Our approach is grounded in collaboration and continuous learning. We aim to develop adaptable tools and strategies that respond to rural communities' unique priorities, shaped by local insight and shared effort.
