The Oakland Box Theater and Gallery (originally known as The Black Box) first opened 10 years ago in 2001 at 1928 Telegraph Avenue in Oakland, California in the building that now houses the Uptown Nightclub. From 2001-2004 The Box hosted over 500 community based events including popular weekly events with the Oakland Poetry Slam, The Oakland Playhouse Improv Troupe (now Big City Improv), and many incredible live music and other community-based events.
The Box was the first venue to consistently bring live music, theater, poetry slams and rotating art exhibits to the area now known as The Uptown Arts and Entertainment District. During that era most downtown Oakland storefront properties (including the recently renovated Fox Theater) were vacant, blighted, and boarded up buildings.
The Box brought life to a desolate urban area by hosting such legendary performances by artists such as Ledisi, Goapele, Zion I, Crown City Rockers, DJ Sake One, Omaya, Felonious, Mark Bamuthi Joseph, Aya De Leon, Taalam Acey, Hanifah Walidah, Drew Dellinger, Devorah Major, Piri Thomas, Fred Frith, Mary Ellen Donald, Mills College Contemporary Music Ensemble, and many others. The Box was recognized in 2002 as "Best Art Space" by the readers of the East Bay Express and was also featured multiple times in the San Francisco Chronicle and in the Oakland Tribune.
