On January 1, 2015 the Ontario Power Authority and the Independent Electricity System Operator merged into one organization under the name, Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO).
This new organization combines the mandates of both organizations and is responsible for the real-time operation of the Ontario electricity system and market, long-term energy planning, procurement, and the promotion of a conservation culture in the province.
