Open Arms for Art Overview

The Open Arms team met in 2019 in Amman, while working in refugee support and community capacity building. They joined forces as a creative initiative due to a desire to enhance local communities through creativity. A shared love of creative tools, particularly theatre, poetry and other applied arts, drove them to found Open Arms for Arts. The team supported their communities through engaging collaborative arts projects from official formation in 2020 to the end of projects in 2022. Mission: to work with participants in local communities to build creative spaces of open, non-judgemental discussion around urgent topics that are affecting their lives. Starting from Jordan and working outwards, we have utilized applied arts practices (namely: theatre/ film/ poetry/ voice acting), with the aim of making an accessible platform to all, and with distinctly unique options for participants to remain completely anonymous (through voice acting) to ensure safety and freedom of speech. As a group, we are deeply passionate about the following subject areas, which have been the main focus areas for our projects: -Prevention of Gender Discrimination; -Combatting Mental Health Stigma; -Awareness for the lived experiences of Refugees and Displaced persons. Initiative successes included: -formation of group of likeminded individuals from diverse communities in Jordan and MENA region including displaced and conflict affected youth -creation of short film in collaboration with ASHTAR Theatre in Ramallah, in memory of the late Palestinian theatre artist Weam Al Dairi from her works (film participated in the Segal International Film Festival in New York, and had its debut at ASHTAR theatre in Ramallah in 2021 -Short film created for Refugee Week 2021 created by displaced youth collaborating to share the message of the impact of war on refugees through methodologies of voice acting and devised poetry
