In a global context marked by food and climate crises, the island territories of the Indian Ocean are particularly vulnerable. The OR-ALIM project aims to understand and support food and agricultural transitions to create sustainable, resilient systems in Réunion, Mauritius, Rodrigues and Mayotte. This multi-disciplinary and multi-dimensional project is based on collaboration between scientists, local players and political decision-makers to promote sustainable, accessible food that is adapted to the realities of island territories. It is coordinated by Laurence TIBERE (IRD), Caroline MEJEAN (INRAE) and Prity PUGO GUNSAM (University of Mauritius). Why is this project important? - To meet food challenges: The project aims to strengthen local and regional food autonomy. - To protect and enhance resources: The aim is to preserve natural resources and local knowledge, while integrating transformations and innovations to ensure the sustainability of farming systems. - To strengthen community resilience: By analyzing eating behaviors and working with local communities, this project aims to strengthen their resilience in the face of crises, and promote healthy eating practices that respect social and cultural situations.
