Osteopathie is een manueel vak dat zijn oorsprong kent in Amerika aan het einde van de 19e eeuw. Vanuit het vak osteopathie, wat zeer uitgebreid is, zijn andere bekende behandelvormen ontwikkeld zoals bijvoorbeeld chiropractie aan het begin van de 20e eeuw en manuele therapie (als specialisatie van fysiotherapie) halverwege de 20e eeuw.
Het vak osteopathie bekijkt het lichaam vanuit de drie systemen:
- Het pariëtale systeem, de botten, spieren en gewrichten.
- Het viscerale systeem, de organen en daarbij behorende structuren
- Het cranio-sacraal systeem, de schedel en daarbij behorende (hersen)zenuwen
Een osteopaat behandelt klachten en blessures variërend van een lokaal enkeltrauma tot meer uitgebreide problematiek zoals bijvoorbeeld spastische darm of concentratieproblemen. Telkens zal de osteopaat het gehele lichaam onderzoeken om te kunnen herleiden waarom een klacht is ontstaan of chronisch is geworden. De osteopaat probeert op zoek te gaan naar de oorzaak van uw klacht.
