Private Education Retirement Annuity Association Overview

The Private Education Retirement Annuity Association was formally organized on September 2, 1972 with the signing of the Trust Agreement. There were 22 founding members of PERAA though only 14 institutions, who braved the gloomy weather, made it that night. Established as a private, non-profit, employees' trust under the auspices of Fund for Assistance to Private Education, PERAA is the first comprehensive retirement program in the country. It was modeled after the Teachers Insurance Annuity Association - College Retirement Equity Fund or TIAA-CREF (the multi-billion dollar retirement system for teachers in the U.S.). Today, it has evolved into a solid, self-reliant association. PERAA remains true to its mission of strengthening retirement security among human resources of private education.
