PAFSE is a science education project that addresses the challenges of public health. It was approved for funding by the European Commission (Horizon 2020 Programme) and involves researchers from nine institutions: NOVA National School of Public Health (ENSP-NOVA, Portugal, project leader), Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science (INESC TEC, Portugal), Computer Technology Institute and Press “DIOPHANTUS” (CTI, Greece), Lisbon Institute of Engineering (ISEL, Portugal), Panepitismio Ioannion (UOI, Greece), Portuguese Association for the Prevention of Road Accidents (PRP, Portugal), University of Cyprus (UCY, Cyprus), University of Minho (UMinho, Portugal) and Uniwersytet Im. Adama Mickiewicza W Poznaniu (AMU, Poland). The consortium will engage schools, universities, enterprises, non-formal education providers, in efforts to build science clusters that prepare youths to be aware of public health challenges, protective factors and patterns of risky behavior, but also in taking a role in their community readiness, and preparedness for hazards. School-based activities will contribute to students’ and citizens’ literacy in a set of public health threats that need to be approached by concerted action, with a focus on epidemics. Other challenges, such as child obesity, chronic illness, climate change, and vaccine hesitancy, will be included in the educational provisions. PAFSE will strength populations’ literacy and mitigate risks, having students playing a central role, as public health ambassadors, early adopters and spreaders of scientific knowledge.
