In 1931, the French physician, Dr. Albert Schweitzer, proclaimed that, “Pain is a more terrible lord of mankind than even death itself.” More then 10% of the world population is affected by this menace. In the United States, one out of every four Americans have suffered pain lasting more then 24 hours. This has resulted in billions of dollars in health care expenses. In fact, Pain affects more Americans than diabetes, heart disease and cancer combined. Pain is the most common cause of Disability. The primary efforts of American Pain Association are directed towards education, research and improving treatment. We are also working in the area of developing expert consensus statements regarding pain issues.
