The mission of Pan African Connections (PAC) is to develop consciousness, capacity, and community among youth and communities of African descent by organizing international experiential learning and roots tourism trips to the African continent and diaspora. Our vision is to empower generations of youth by dramatically increasing their exposure to international travel, personally relevant and engaging narratives, leadership opportunities, fundraising experience, and a rigorous college-prep curriculum.
While in college, founder Ani Mwalimu studied abroad in Ghana via the SIT African Diaspora program in order to further his understanding of his West African roots. It was there, in a village outside of Kumasi, that a Queen Mother told him to “go back and tell the descendants of our ancestors that we welcome them and we want them to come back home." In 2010, PAC embarked on its first Sankofa Sojourn with seven students from Boston International High School. In 2015, the organization launched its first adult Sankofa Sojourn with 15 participants from central Ohio.
PAC diversified its destinations in 2016 by initiating its first Caribbean trip to Barbados. Adult participants simultaneously celebrated the island’s 50th anniversary of independence and Cropover, a Bajan form of Carnival. In that same year, PAC gained federal tax-exempt status as a 501(c)(3) organization and began operating under the guidance of a Board of Directors. Later in 2016, PAC reprised both the youth and adult Sankofa Sojourn with students from Philadelphia and Camden, NJ as well as chaperones from around the country.
Now, PAC organizes youth and adult trips annually. Schools, churches, foster agencies, and youth groups in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Deleware, and Massachusetts can inquire about partnering with PAC.
