Paws For Diabetics Inc. specialises in training support and accreditation of Diabetic Alert Dogs. Established in 2005, it was the first organisation in Australia to recognise, support and train Diabetes Alert Dogs. It has since grown from a small group of dedicated people to an Australia-wide organisation.
Specifically trained Medical Alert Assistance Dogs are a valuable tool in Diabetes management, as they give their owners warning well in advance of an impending hypoglycemic episode and have also been proven to be quicker and more real time accurate than CGMs. This allows for prompt treatment to avert the episode from happening. A hypoglycemic attack left untreated can lead to coma and even death, so these dogs are true lifesavers.
Paws for Diabetics' main objectives are to:
* Provide support and training of hypoglycaemic and hyperglycaemic alert dogs for people living with diabetes in Australia
* Support access and acceptance for Assistance Dogs in Australia, as not all disabilities are visible or obvious
* Raise awareness in Australia of the importance of Assistance Dogs and the vital roles they play in the lives of their handlers
* Educate the general public and businesses to the access rights of Assistance Dogs in Australia
