Pictures can quickly communicate difficult and confusing concepts. When combined, pictures and stories are extremely powerful tools! Peni kila is the Hawaiian word for ‘writing instrument.’ As an executive, a story teller, an accountant and a fountain pen aficionado, Peni Kila embodies my passion for communication and finance. Financial statements, well prepared using the unique language of accounting, tell stories and paint pictures. Whether the financial data comprises internal reports for management or public reports for shareholders and investors, the messages conveyed are critical to the business. Most managers look at their financial statements and are either confused by the data or revert to applying simple ratios in an attempt to understand the company. In doing so, they often miss a wonderful opportunity to intimately understand the business. Well prepared financial reports can tell stories and paint pictures about the company’s history, culture, management, employees, health, strategies, future prospects, products, strengths, weaknesses and opportunities. Of course, poorly prepared financial materials miss the opportunity to enhance a company’s value, image and decision making; at worst, they convey incorrect or misleading information. Accountants are great at crunching numbers and preparing data, but only a few of us are good at telling stories and painting pictures with financial information.
