Penn State Department of Chemistry Overview
The Department of Chemistry at Penn State has a three-pronged mission: to conduct world-class, groundbreaking research in the chemical sciences, offer the highest quality education to all students, and to engage the public through innovative outreach initiatives. The department's leadership in research, teaching, and outreach includes the traditional areas of physical, analytical, inorganic, and organic chemistry, and has rapidly evolved to encompass energy & environmental chemistry, chemical biology, biophysical chemistry, soft and hard materials chemistry, and nanotechnology. We offer a stimulating environment that supports cutting-edge research in both traditional and interdisciplinary areas, including a 177,000 square foot chemistry research building called the Benkovic Building on the University Park campus, excellent shared instrumentation facilities, and close interactions with the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences (https://www.huck.psu.edu), the Materials Research Institute (https://www.mri.psu.edu), the Institutes of Energy and the Environment (https://iee.psu.edu/home), the Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (https://www.icds.psu.edu), and the U.S. National Science Foundation National Synthesis Center for Emergence in the Molecular and Cellular Sciences (https://ncems.psu.edu/).
