La notion de compensation est apparue en France en 2005 avec la loi du 11 février pour l’égalité des droits et des chances.
Le fondateur de la société Permobil, le Docteur Per Uddén, a abordé cette notion dès 1965 :
« Chaque personne atteinte de handicap à le droit de compenser autant que possible son handicap à l’aide des mêmes outils techniques que ceux que nous utilisons tous dans notre vie quotidienne »
