The National Institutes of Science, Technology, and Innovation Program (INCTs) is characterized by scientific national and international cooperation in large, long-term research projects.
The INCTs involve researchers from different fields and aim to develop projects with high scientific impact. Since its establishment in 2008, the INCTs Program has already established over 1,835 national and 1,302 international partnerships.
These partnerships include collaborations with 515 Brazilian companies and 139 foreign entities. In terms of human resources training, the INCTs have played a crucial role in training thousands of professionals at the masters, doctoral, and post-doctoral levels. This has contributed to increase the critical mass of research field in Brazil.
The "INCT PlantStress Biotech" project therefore aims to integrate several Brazilian research groups and international partners with expertise in plant physiology, transcriptomics, epigenetics, proteomics, bioinformatics, and functional genomics. All the integrated research groups aim to establish a multidisciplinary and multi-institutional network of national and international excellence. The primary goal of the network is to generate biotech assets applied to crop plants, including maize, soybean, and cotton.
The project involves the discovery, isolation, characterization, and functional validation of genes and molecules involved in pest resistance (including, Meloidogyne spp., Helicoverpa armigera, and Spodoptera frugiperda, among others) and water deficit tolerance. The knowledge gained from this research (biotech assets) will be used to develop biotech products such as bio-insecticides and genetically modified soybean, maize, and cotton.
In addition, the INCT PlantStress Biotech research groups are committed to promoting the qualification of students and professionals in different research areas, including biotechnology, genomics, and bioinformatics, both in Brazil and abroad.
