PressFriends Inc. Overview

PressFriends was an all-volunteer, youth-led nonprofit formed by kids for kids in 2008. Our mission was to improve opportunities for elementary school kids in higher need areas, to empower every kid to become a socially responsible leader and mentor, and to create compassion and understanding in youth from diverse backgrounds to strengthen communities. From 2008 to 2024, PressFriends trained over 1000 student volunteers and mentored over 5000 underserved elementary students. We used peer mentoring and project-based learning to help elementary students improve their writing skills. During the school year, we held free afterschool and weekend newspaper clubs at Title I elementary schools and at community program sites. In the summer, we held free summer camp programs with boys & girls clubs and community centers, combining an activity with a writing exercise. Our summer programs included ArtFriends, STEMFriends, SportsFriends, DanceFriends, MusicFriends, TheatreFriends, EcoFriends, BookFriends, MUNFriends and PenPalFriends. Due to limitations by LAUSD on volunteers, PressFriends regretably stopped its programming in 2024.
