Project SPELL at UCLA Overview
Project SPELL volunteers provide language learning UCLA employees, members of the wider LA community, and children in Peru free 1-on-1, individualized English as a Second Language (ESL) lessons through maintaining on- and off-campus partnerships. utors provide their availability, background, and skills, and are matched with employee language learners whose schedules and needs make for a convenient and beneficial match. Tutors work independently, meeting one on one with their learners at locations across campus at their assigned tutoring time. Tutors use the goals and curriculum provided to prepare lessons tailored to their learners’ individual goals. Tutors and learners work together in a dynamic partnership that sees both parties learning, growing, and seeing themselves and each other in new ways. In addition, we also provide our tutors with engaging professional development, community engagement, and materials and training workshops to better prepare them for their role as tutors and beyond.
