RAD Bikes (Recycle a Dunger) runs not-for-profit community bike workshops in Ōtautahi/Christchurch. RAD provides workshop spaces where everyone is welcome to help recycle and learn how to fix bikes for themselves or others. Bikes, tools, parts and technical guidance are all provided onsite. RAD also runs a range of mechanics courses along with community programmes and special bike-focused events. RAD Bikes’ core purpose is improving access to cycling, minimising waste and developing community well-being. RAD wants everyone in Ōtautahi to have access to bicycles, bike tools, parts and servicing advice. We do this while actively reducing the number of bicycles and associated parts going to landfill, repairing and restoring bikes to increase their useful lifespan. Providing a safe and welcoming environment for people to connect, learn new skills and help one another is at RAD’s heart. RAD now wants to establish and sustain a real home. We want to become a full-time operation. This will allow us to serve our city for years to come and help us all towards a greener and more connected future. We now have the people, equipment and expertise in place. This gives us the confidence that the time is ripe to achieve our grand vision of a full-time set up that’s safe and fun for all to enjoy and benefit from. RAD already supports complimentary groups and community bike workshops to do fantastic work within their own communities, and vibrant large-scale community bike workshops around the globe illustrate to us what success can look like and confidence in how we can achieve our vision.
