EXPLAIN: WHY STREET?
To say it bluntly, we got our real education in the streets. We all may have not had the easiest time growing up, but we decided early on to take those experiences and turn them into a mentality that now gets us through anything. We like to share those experiences and educate kids on how they don’t need to be a victim of circumstance… that you can get through situational bullshit and come out on the other side a happier, healthier human being.
The streets are where I choose to learn. I choose to hear what people have to say. Although I may not agree with them, I enjoy learning about people's perspectives and what happened to them that gave them the means to observe life in that way.
I enjoy learning. I enjoy educating. Most of all, I enjoy seeing people's mentalities expand as they learn more about compassion and empathy.
Kids have it rough these days. They have the normal pains of growing up… (peer pressure, hormones, self-confidence issues, and more) but now add social media. These kids are feeling the pressure to market themselves to a society that expects perfection. Kids aren’t supposed to need a degree in psychology and advertising to navigate the terror of Instagram/Twitter/Snapchat/etc. This is what they are learning: Creating a façade to please, to brag, to seem relevant amongst their peers. “How many followers do you have??” should not be a question when you are first meeting someone. A seventh grader asked me that while lecturing on STREET ART VS GRAFFITI for an arts education lesson at a local charter school. She got a very long explanation from me on why followers should mean NOTHING/NUNCA!
This is why we do what we do. This is why we will continue to do what we do… Support kids through tough times…
