The Regional Marine Centre (RMC) is domiciled in the University of Ghana in Accra-Ghana and operates under the College of Basic and Applied Sciences (CBAS). It has implemented projects in partnership with the US Office of Naval Research, the Europe Africa Marine Network (EAMNet) Capacity Building for Earth Observation, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of the United States, and the Monitoring for Environment and Security in Africa (MESA). The Centre is currently leading a consortium in implementing the continental Global Monitoring for Environment and Security and Africa programme (GMES & Africa) in North and Western Africa.
The RMC seeks to provide operational services, promote research and build capacity on processes in the marine and coastal environment, emphasising the use of technology and earth observation for policymaking and marine and coastal resource management. Since its inception, the RMC has been involved in diverse projects varying from traditional marine/fisheries science research to multidisciplinary research that focuses on resolving food security issues, coastal management issues, improved marine environment resilience, and monitoring of coastal ecosystems. The Centre, via its projects, seeks to provide products that enhance and save the lives of its final beneficiaries, such as artisanal fishermen and coastal communities.
The geographical scope of the RMC is currently extending from twelve coastal countries in West Africa (Benin, Cape Verde, Cote d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo) to 18 countries, including six countries in northern Africa (Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Mauritania, and Libya). Together with its partners, the Centre has firmly established functional networks with its beneficiaries’ countries with state institutions, research institutions, academia, regional bodies, and the private sector.
