Roger Falconer has over 40 years experience working in academic posts in water environmental management, including: Lecturer, University of Birmingham (1977-86), Professor of Water Engineering, University of Bradford (1987-97) and Professor of Water Management, Cardiff University (1998-date). He specialises in developing, refining and applying computational hydro-environmental models for predicting hydrodynamic, water quality and sediment transport processes in coastal, estuarine and river waters. His computer models have been mounted by 50 major consulting engineering companies and government agencies, and he has provided advice on over 100 environmental impact assessment studies. He has published extensively in the field, given 500 lectures in his field and managed research contracts exceeding £11M.
Roger is a Fellow of: the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Learned Society of Wales, the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management, and is a Chartered Engineer and Chartered Environmentalist. He has been involved in the International Association of Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research throughout his career and was President (2011-15).
Roger has served on a number of high level government committees, particularly with regard to flood and tidal energy, and has acted as an Expert Witness in a number of cases, most notably the Malaysia v. Singapore Land Reclamation Case (2003-04) - adjudicated by the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea. He served as a Member of the UK Government's Expert Panel for the Severn Tidal Power Feasibility Studies (2008-10) and was part of the consulting team, led by ITP Energise, providing technical support to the Government independent Hendry Review of Tidal Lagoons (2016).
Roger provides consultancy services on: hydro-environmental impact assessment studies, tidal and river renewable energy, flood risk modelling and management, model auditing and expert witness.
