Dr. Jane Goodall first established Roots & Shoots in Mainland China in 1994. Our mission is to foster respect and compassion for all living things, to promote understanding of all cultures and beliefs, and to inspire each individual to take action to make the world a better place for people, animals, and the environment.
In May 2017, Roots & Shoots was registered with the Beijing Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau under the name of Beijing Roots & Shoots Community Youth Service Centre. As a charity organisation working on youth environmental education, Roots & Shoots has entered into a new era. Roots & Shoots groups throughout the country allow young people to develop their own methods to address issues in these areas, raise awareness and bring hope to the planet.
By the end of 2019, Roots & Shoots had established nearly 800 Roots & Shoots Groups in every province, municipality and autonomous region in Mainland China, with more than 22,000 registered members.
