Sacha’s Sweet Tale One day in 1976, to fulfil the birthday wish of her little nephew, Anwara decided to bake a black forest cake in the shape of a car, a wish as innocent and full of fun as her little nephew. She worked such wonders that soon, not only her nephew, but her friends and relatives boasted about Anwara’s custom cake, wanting more, spreading her name, making requests and placing orders. Thus began Sacha’s journey. Taking her business from her home to a shop, Anwara creates signature Black Forest Cakes, customized to her client’s wishes and within a few years, Sacha’s became the go to place for all of Karachi. A decade after, Sacha’s is still engraved in the memories of those that recall the excitement of cutting a custom-made black forest birthday cake. And Sacha’s continues on to make memories today with multiple outlets, signature customized designer cakes and the only bakery that delivers. Fond memories of a sweet customer: I remember Sacha's Cakes a palace where as a child, I would sit quietly behind the counter and watch the most extraordinary cakes pass before my nose. What was this place where Superman could rub shoulders with the Little Mermaid? How did a rectangular slab of cake suddenly transform itself into a multi-layered festival of flavours and colours? Who were the wizards who made this happen? These were just some of the questions I asked myself as I munched on leftover patties. But the most important question was: where did all those cakes actually go? I quickly realised that what made Sacha's Cakes special was not simply the artisans who produced the cakes, but the lines of customers waiting to buy them. Age was no impediment to cake-buying: middle-aged men, desperately seeking cakes for their wives, could be as demanding as a gaggle of spoilt and tearful children. Everyone wanted a piece of Sacha's Cakes. They wanted the crazy cake designs; they wanted the webs of icing. And, most of all, they wanted a little piece of Sacha's Cakes magic.
