The private sector drives the cereal value chains in Sub-Saharan Africa with leading crops as maize, rice, sorghum, wheat, pearl millet and finger millet. Rejects of poor quality grain by manufacturers triggers deficits and lack of full factory utilization that results into massive loss for processors, aggregators and producers. Aflatoxin contamination in grain remains the unresolved quality challenges and has accelerated manufacturers concerns on how drive Aflatoxin safe value chains. Safe eGrain Partnership is a long term, sector-driven public-private partnership focused safe supply chains on a collaborative progressive journey from unsafe to safe grain between farmers, SMEs, aggregators, millers, food processors and consumers in Africa. Managed by a secretariat, the Safe eGrain Partnership is focused on 7 core interventions based on private sector prioritization with a special focus on Aflatoxin Safe Commercial Zones. Best practices in food safety are promoted through quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) principles however, the core focus is on Aflatoxin reduction which has been prioritized. Other focus include digitization, traceability, extension, aggregation and inclusive market systems. Africa Safe eGrain Partnership is promoting Aflatoxin Safe Commercial Zones ( Aflatoxin Safe CoZos) which are private sector-led driven production zones that enhance adoption of safe supply chains by farmer organizations and aggregators.
