Derrière le projet pistil se cache un jeune diplômé en bioingénieure de l’environnement à l’UCLouvain.
Cette fin de cycle a ouvert les portes à des organisations incitant l'entrepreunariat (Yncubator) et le prototypage (Makilab). Le timming était donc là pour le lancement d'un projet qui depuis le confinement était resté à l’état d’ébauche. Le projet pistil a pour objectif de rendre la culture du safran plus compétitive en Europe.
Le marché mondial du safran est actuellement déstructuré. La production concentrée à 90% en Iran, les producteurs locaux font face à de nombreux d’intermédiaires avec le consommateur. Cela fait accroitre grandement le prix du safran et le risque de fraude. Produire du safran localement (en Europe), comme il se faisait ces dernières décennies, permet de garantir sa traçabilité et sa qualité à un prix raisonnable et cohérent. Pour que ce projet puisse voir le jour, il faut contourner le problème qui est à la base du déclin de la production de safran en Europe: une main d’œuvre trop onéreuse. Pour cela, une tentative de mécanisation de la culture de safran pourrait être la solution à sa réimplantation et redonner confiance aux amateurs de safran européens.
