Sahapedia is an open online resource on the arts, cultures and histories of India and South Asia. ‘Saha’ (Sanskrit for ‘together with’) defines this endeavour to create knowledge collectively, drawing on experts and practitioners, collaborating with institutions, and through public participation.
Sahapedia is both a resource and a platform in that registered users may log in and submit material for curation and form communities of interest. Sahapedia is also an online archive that hosts a library, cultural events calendar and news.
We are working to foster wider public engagement with local histories, and the histories of institutions, to facilitate interchange across regions and languages.
We want to encourage exchange and increase public access to museums and government archives. The Internet offers the promise of government archives unlimited reach, but information is scattered and not always reliable.
We will be working on areas like developing the Library (monographs, out-of-print scholarly work, old journals, unpublished reports); linking our modules with online archives of texts, recordings, translation; curating material that makes tourism more meaningful, creating resources for education responsive to local histories and needs, developing scholarly resources (editing online journals, teaching old scripts online), and making the best use of digital interactive to explain techniques in, e.g., music, architecture, weaving.
