The primary purpose of the foundation is to provide medical treatment, surgery, and rehabilitative services to the poor of India. The goal is to provide the assistance to the poor by not only getting them operated but also providing them with free post-care as part of the service.
The foundation was set up in 1995 by Mr Sunil Anand and his wife, Mrs Anu Anand (Hover Here for a picture) in the memory of their seventeen year old son Sanjay, who died in a car accident in Staten Island, NY. They offered their son's organs and tissue to help heal and save a group of strangers. This service helped save the lives of so many people. This helped keep Sanjay's legacy alive in the hearts and bodies of all those who were impacted.
The New York Regional Transplant program saved over 300 individuals with Sanjay's gift of vital organs and issues. Crippled children were able to walk with his donation of bones to the greater Metropolitan Bone Bank. Two people were given the gift of sight through the eye bank. The New York Cornell Medical Centre was able to help a burn victim with skin grafts. Inspired by Organ and Tissue donations which helped hundreds of people, Sunil and Anu Anand established a foundation named Sanjay Anand Charitable Foundation (SACF) in New York and Sanjay Anand Charitable Trust in New Delhi, India in 1995. Since then the foundation adopted two major projects:
• Sponsors eye surgeries for the removal of cataract and the implantation of IOU Lenses @ 100 surgeries a month since January 1996 till date.
• Opened a hospital in Patna, India in collaboration with Bharat Vikas Viklang Punarvas Kendra, to install artificial limbs to the handicapped and opened a surgery ward for Polio surgeries for the young children.
• Recently established Sanjay Anand Society for rehabilitation and welfare to provide education in rehabilitation and research activities.
