Greg Smith completed an 8000-hour apprenticeship in construction in New Zealand through the Royal New Zealand Engineers (NZ Army). The training included 3 years of extensive correspondence courses combined with Polytechnic technical courses in carpentry-construction & finishing, brick & block laying, solid plastering, drywall partitioning & ceiling including plastering, glazing. He also did in house training with the electricians, where he learnt house and warehouse wiring involving single and three phase DB boards, with the plumbers, where he learnt high pressure copper piping, geyser installation, waste & sewerage pipe laying and gas fitting, and the blacksmith shop where he learnt the skill of arc welding and steel fabrication. On the military side, he also learnt additional skills of instructor’s course, leadership, demolitions, explosives, structural engineering, bridging, hazardous material handling and multiple driver licences. Later in life operational requirements led Greg to using his construction skills on high rise buildings, this required Greg to acquire another skill set in the form of rope access, in 2011 he completed his Level 1 rope access course and as he was the owner of the business he set about working his way up the Rope Access level ladder and in 2015 he acquired his Level 3 Rope Access Supervisor qualification. All this training put him in good stead for owning and managing a business, motivating and training staff, managing and inspecting the quality of workmanship. Greg has specialised in multi-storey building repairs, maintenance and resurrection for the past few years. Firstly, under Kiwi Promotions and later with South African Rope Access and worked on prestigious corporate buildings and for clients like Nedbank, GVK, SAB Miller, JHI, The Department Basic Education, The Department of Justice, Pulse Property Group, BHP Billiton, Netcare 911, Polokwane Magistrates Court, SABC, Ponte Towers, to name but a few. Specialists At Rope Access was recently registered in order for Greg to give his undivided attention to quality and integrity in the Rope Access sector with the Company Vision “Heightening your building’s value” Our values are: Empowering our people, Commitment to Quality, Integrity, Passion, Respect, Leadership, Personal Accountability and Embracing Diversity. Due to the nature of our work we are regulated beyond comprehension, that and since we abide by these regulations and practice our own rigorous safety protocol we have not had any lost time injuries during our time of operation. Safety files are generated for every project, signage is always visible on our sites, toolbox talks are given on a weekly basis and DSTI’s are completed daily. Equipment is inspected in accordance with Rope Access regulations (every 3 months or shorter) and suspect equipment is examined and if necessary removed from site and written off. All our Technicians carry a current IWH Rope Access qualification which we verify prior to their employment. We don’t allow Level 1 Technicians to work without a Level 2 technician onsite as the supervisor. Among other technicians our Level 2 carries a current first aid certificate and is appointed as our first aid officer. Depending on the project size we may have a permanent Safety officer on site all the time. The company is registered with Workmen’s Compensation and we carry Public Liability Insurance, it prides me that we have never had to claim from either.
