Science on the Spectrum (SoS) is a 501(c)(3) that envisions a world where individuals on the autism spectrum are given equal opportunity to contribute to advancing scientific inquiry and research by facilitating increased neurodiversity in scientific institutions. Individuals with ASD have significantly higher levels of unemployment and underemployment compared to neurotypical peers and other groups with intellectual and developmental disorders. Research indicates 80 percent of working-age individuals with autism are unemployed. Rigid and antiquated hiring practices generally overlook non-traditional candidates from filling positions of need in scientific institutions. People with ASD have unique skill sets that can be greatly beneficial to science and research but who are often unable to follow traditional educational paths or standard job recruiting and training to build careers of choice. As a result, highly intelligent and capable individuals are kept out of potential career opportunities while the scientific community is missing out on potential talent they may not otherwise reach. By breaking down traditional barriers that inhibit individuals with autism from pursuing careers in science, SoS will help find, place and fund individuals on the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in positions of need in nonprofit scientific institutions. SoS circumvents rigid outdated hiring practices by finding outside funding and resources to support careers for people on the autism spectrum in science. SoS aims to bring together nonprofit scientific institutions and highly talented individuals on the autism spectrum to secure employment in science-related fields—the crossroads where neurodiversity meets biodiversity. Individuals who might otherwise be prevented from working in science due to their lack of formal education and/or inability to obtain employment due to social barriers can thrive using working technical knowledge acquired through non-traditional routes.
